Democrat says Bannon’s lawyer said former strategist, facing subpoena, would otherwise have been willing to respond

Steve Bannon refused to answer questions from the House Intelligence Committee during a closed-door session, even after he was issued a subpoena to testify by the committee on Tuesday, saying that the White House had told him not to.

Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said during a news conference after the marathon hearing, that Bannon’s lawyer had told the committee that the former Breitbart executive “was willing to answer our questions but under instructions from the White House not to”. He condemned what he called “a gag order from the White House”.

Democrats accused Republicans of selective amnesia on Tuesday as President Donald Trump’s Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, testified under oath that she “did not hear” Trump use the term “shithole” to describe African countries.

New Jersey senator Cory Booker angrily criticized Nielsen’s comments, telling her: “Your silence and your amnesia is complicity.”

Physician says president has benefited from ‘a lifetime of abstinence from tobacco and alcohol’ though he could stand to exercise more

He does not exercise, has a long history of eating McDonald’s and drinking Diet Coke, and is just short of obese. Yet Donald Trump’s health is “excellent”, his mind is “sharp” and he only needs four or five hours’ sleep a night, the presidential physician said on Tuesday.

How can that be? “Some people have just great genes,” a navy doctor, Ronny Jackson, told reporters at the White House. “I told the president that if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years, he might live to be 200 years old ... But I would say the answer to your question is he has incredibly good genes and it’s just the way God made him.”

Department asks high court for ‘direct review’ of ruling that temporarily blocks Trump administration from phasing out Daca

The Department of Justice said on Tuesday it is appealing against a federal judge’s ruling that temporarily blocked the Trump administration from phasing out the Obama-era program granting protections to young, undocumented immigrants – and asking the supreme court to intervene.

The department said it had filed an appeal in the ninth circuit court and intends to “take the rare step” later this week of seeking a fast track to the supreme court.

Gallup poll shows Trump has averaged just 39% approval rating since his inauguration, a number that’s unprecedented for a US president

Donald Trump wraps up a year in office with the lowest average approval rating of any elected president in his first year.

That is according to polling by Gallup, which shows that Trump has averaged just a 39% approval rating since his inauguration. The previous low was held by Bill Clinton, whose first-year average stood 10 points higher than Trump’s, at 49%.
